L2L Day 14 Cranleigh to Guildford - 10 miles
The Downs link path through Cranfield is well surfaced and lined with Sussex post and rail fencing...but how do you build it??
We had a perfect cloudless sky.
Crossing over a bridge we disturbed a heron which took flight
I was just about to photograph this lovely old Massey Ferguson 565 when Mel appeared.
Mel had already hung a new field gate, built a stile and was in the process of sinking some new fenceposts (old telegraph poles) 3 ft into the ground. All in a morning's work.
He'd love a new tractor but this 50 year old one refuses to die. No lights, no hydraulics but the engine keeps on starting so why change??
Mel had also been out harvesting some of the willow offshoots.

These were looking ready for tomorrow.
A little further along we carefully crossed the stream.
The Wey and Arun canal is in the process of funding an extension, new bridges and locks.

In the waiting room that survives on the platform there's a display of photographs, timetables and ticket prices from Bradshaw's guide.
The worst day for Wonersh must have been during WW2 in January 1942, 7 people died when a passenger train was bombed as it approached the platform. The wounded were attended to by a team of Canadian medics who were billeted nearby.
The canal joins up with the river Wey just outside Guilford and this group of sculling friends were having some fun and games trying - not particularly succesfully - to do a 3 point turn in the width of the river.
Much hilarity!
